Across town, a cockroach scampers across the grimy floor of a gutted apartment to the beat of sirens and screams. From the torn mattress on the floor, two lovers moan and gasp, and, exhausted, roll to face the broken window.

He points at a star shining brighter than the rest. "Make a wish."
And she does.

When dawn comes to harvest wishes from the celestial fields, not one shall be overlooked, for regardless of wherever you are, and whoever you are, the stars will shine the same - and they all shine for you.
This was not, in the slightest, representative of my original intention for writing.
